Transurethral Resection of prostate
Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) refers to a type of prostate surgery which is performed to treat an abnormally enlarged prostate or a condition called Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). TURP is considered as a highly effective option for the treatment of urinary symptoms caused by BPH.
The procedure
TURP usually takes about 60 to 90 minutes. The patient will be administered either a spinal anaesthetic or a general anaesthetic.
During this procedure, a resectoscope or combined visual and surgical equipment is inserted through the tip of the penis into the urethra, which is surrounded by the prostate. Using the instrument, the doctor cuts off the excess amount of prostate tissue that is disrupting the urine flow and enhances the size of the channel. This helps you to completely empty your bladder.
This carries a lot of problems like bleeding, urinary tract infection and urethral stricture.
